"In 1984, 37% of all computer science graduates in the U.S. were women, but today that number is just 18%. Only 20% of AP Computer Science test-takers are female, and just 0.4% of high school girls express interest in majoring in Computer Science." Source - http://girlswhocode.com/about-us/
"In Athens, Greece, only 26% of the total numbered of registered students in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) schools are women, compared to 74% of registered students being men."
Women hold just 26% of the approximately four million computing-related occupations in the United States. U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013 (Occupational Category: 15–0000)
We, at the U.S. Embassy Athens, believe that in order to close the gender gap in technology, we have to inspire girls to pursue computer science by exposing them to real life and on-screen role models. That is why last spring, we partnered with Greek NGO Mataroa and sponsored a one-of-a-kind, innovative coding program for a total of 100 Greek girls aged 10-16, in two Greek cities, Kalamata and Kozani. By using innovative tools and with the guidance of three experienced female instructors, our Greek CodeGirls learned the basics of HTML5 and CSS programming languages, how to create simple websites, and also some of the secrets and the future of new technologies.
Our vision is to help Greek organizations minimize the gap and reach gender parity in computing fields. We believe this is paramount to ensure the economic prosperity of women, families, and communities across Greece, and to equip citizens with the 21st century tools for innovation and social change. We believe that more girls exposed to computer science at a young age will lead to more women working in the technology and engineering fields.
Are you a young girl, interested in advancing your knowledge and skills in coding and taking part in the intermediate course? Take a look at the video we created to get a sense of the CodeGirls experience.
CodeGirls part II will be coming soon in Kalamata and Kozani...details to be announced...so stay tuned!
