Greek researcher Yannis Assael and his colleagues at Google subsidiary DEEP MIND and University of Oxford created "Pythia,” an artificial intelligence algorithm trained to assist historians in deciphering eroded Ancient Greek inscriptions. Pythia learned to recognize some 35,000 eroded texts containing over 3 million words. These texts were found on varied surfaces like stone, ceramic, and metal and ranged from the 7th centuty BC to the 5th century AD (1,500 to 2,700 years old).

 

With the support of the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, SHA (Social Hacker Academy) has created an educational program that will run for seven months, in Heraklion, Crete, where SHA will have physical presence with its Project Management Team & volunteers. The project is called “De-Code Integration” and aims at empowering vulnerable social groups (refugees/migrants/unemployed), residing in Heraklion Crete, to develop their skills (hard & soft skills) and prepare them to become employable, connecting them with tech companies’ recruiters.

The Greek Space Team White Noise of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) has been very successful in the annual CanSat simulation training contest. The competition was held in Texas, United States, on 14-17 June, by the Astronautical Society (AAS) with the support of NASA and Goddard Space Flight Center. White Noise is the first Greek team to be able to get the CanSat Final Entry Ticket in the US, where each year the best aerospace students from the best universities in the world participate. The score made by White Noise was 94.756%, winning 4th place among 93 teams.

Dr. Georgia Virginia Panopoulou is one of twenty-four scientists who were recently granted a fellowship by Hubble Fellowship Program of NASA (NHFP) to conduct postdoctoral research in California.

The NHFP aims to enable outstanding postdoctoral scientists to pursue independent research in the realm of NASA astrophysics, using theory, observation, experimentation, or instrument development. Each fellowship provides the awardee up to three years of support.
