Greek musician Iason Achilleas Mezilis and his team designed a microphone to record sound on the planet Mars. Mezilis placed the microphone in Perseverance to record the sounds on the red planet.
This experimental device traveled to Mars along with another audio recorder made by French scientists.
When NASA engineers need a name for a robotic Mars “rover,” they know where to find creativity. They turn to America’s young people.
More than 28,000 students — from kindergarten through 12th grade — submitted names for the rover that landed on Mars last month. It was Alex Mather, a Virginia seventh-grader, who won the contest with his suggestion, “Perseverance.”
The newly announced members of the Artemis Team — the next astronaut missions to the moon — reflect the diversity of and range of opportunity in the United States. Of the nearly 20 astronauts announced, half are women and people of color.
NASA announced its latest selection of 18 elite astronauts — all of whom hail from its pre-existing corps — to the Artemis Team.
The Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite — named for the former director of NASA’s Earth Science Division — launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on November 21.
“The Earth is changing, and this satellite will help deepen our understanding of how,” said Karen St. Germain, director of NASA’s Earth Science Division. “The changing Earth processes are affecting sea level globally, but the impact on local communities varies widely.”
Alain Ratier, director-general of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, which is supporting the mission, said, “The data from this satellite, which is so critical for climate monitoring and weather forecasting, will be of unprecedented accuracy.”

NASA’s new mission to the moon — which aims to put the first woman on the lunar surface by 2024 — has been named Artemis, after the ancient Greek goddess who was the daughter of Zeus and Leto.
Artemis is the goddess of the moon, as well as being the twin sister of Apollo — after whom NASA’s pioneering moon missions in the 1960s and 1970s were named.
NASA astronaut Clayton C. Anderson had the happiness to spend 167 days hanging over the blue planet, to understand its fragility and admire the beauty of the Earth.
It comes, therefore, to take us on an exciting journey beyond the limits of our planet, with photos from its mission to the International Space Station (ISS), narratives about life on one of the most sophisticated technological achievements of the United States, but also a video game about global geography.
