Greek delegation explores U.S. migration and resettlement issues’ best practices.

Vice Mayor on Migrant and Refugee Affairs of the Municipality of Athens Lefteris Papagiannakis and Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare and Solidarity at the Municipality of Thessaloniki Kalypso Goula, recently took part in an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) sponsored by the U.S. EMBASSY ATHENS. Along with Major Dimitris Amoutzias, Deputy Commander of Mytilene police precinct, and Harry Kalliaras, Advisor to the Mayor of Trikala, the two Vice Mayors explored how U.S. federal, state, and local governments collaborate with communities and non-profits to resettle refugees across the United States and ensure their successful social and economic integration.

Over the course of ten days, the four exchange program participants visited Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; St Louis, Missouri; and Rochester, New York to examine policies, programs and institutions that facilitate integration of immigrants and refugees into American society. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Rochester International Academy and the International Institute St. Louis.
