«Education Unites: From Camp to Campus»: Scholarship program for 141 refugees

26 June 2018

U.S. Embassy Athens proudly collaborated with The American College of Thessaloniki – Anatolia College, Deree - The American College of Greece Events, and Perrotis College – American Farm School, to provide higher education scholarships to 141 refugees in Athens and Thessaloniki.

The idea was to give displaced young people the opportunity to attend college, which in many cases was interrupted by the tragedy of war and violence that led these people to put themselves on boats and take the risk of building new lives for themselves.

One student recalled his first Thanksgiving dinner, celebrated with his fellow students and teachers: “We feel as we have family. For me, I have left my family for six years, or more. So I felt as I have family – I have someone behind me, supporting me. Always.”

Students passionately expressed their gratitude for the experiences they had as students this year. As one student said, “Thank you for teaching me everything and to make me feel like I belong to this society. That I belong to life.”
