Marianna Economou’s inspiring film ”When Tomatoes Met Wagner” has been chosen to represent Greece at the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9, 2020.
The documentary relates the story of a near-deserted Greek village in Thessaly rescued by organic tomatoes — and Wagner.
It is one of those rare documentaries that manage to combine a universally relevant topic with likeable, unique protagonists in an audience-pleasing but honest manner. The heroes are the inhabitants of a small Greek village, a total of 33 people – mostly elderly women, as the young people have all left for the cities. The residents are led by two middle-aged men, Christos and Aleco, as they work on an organic farm and make tomato and honey products by hand, which they then export around the world. The team of the aspiring tomato growers found themselves listening to Wagner’s music for motivation, thus the title of the film.
Τhe film had its world premiere in February of 2019, at the Cubix cinema in Berlin during the well-regarded ”Berlinale” International Film Festival.
The Greek Ministry chose the film in hopes that it will be selected by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to compete for an Oscar on the night of the 2020 awards.
The cast of the film features actors Christos Takas and Alexandros Gousiaris, and the producers of the movie are Yuri Averof, Rea Apostolides, and Spiros Mavrogenis.
