21:00 Concert at the Upper Stage
Few composers in the history of music have exerted as powerful an influence on their peers, future generations of artists and wide-ranging aesthetic quests as Karlheinz Stockhausen (22 August 1928 – 5 December 2007).
The father of electronic music and a modernizer of musical notation and thought, Stockhausen left behind a vast and varied body of compositions and theoretical works. Time and its different scales -from the very small or momentary to the eternal or cosmic- are the threads that run through his entire oeuvre. In his compositions, these elements serve to bridge the personal and the collective, creating a singular universe with its own mythology, symbols and rituals.
As at previous OCC Open Days, visitors will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with different aspects of the composer's work as they work their way through the OCC: from the open spaces, which are largely dedicated to works from the composer's middle period with an emphasis on open forms and spirituality, to the Upper Stage, where self-standing works from all seven operas in his Licht cycle (1977-2003) will be performed, and the specially arranged Main Stage, where they can hear electronic music in its authentic quadraphonic versions.
Visitors will also be able to peruse scores and books by Stockhausen, as well as artefacts connected with his composing, and to view films about his work. The tribute is bookended by two concerts given by small and medium-sized ensembles which will play emblematic works from Stockhausen's oeuvre in the Upper Stage.
