American singer-songwriter, actress and anti-bullying advocate, Meredith O'Connor will visit schools in Athens during her visit in Greece from 31 March to 3 April 2015 where she will perform her songs and she will speak to students using art as a mean of showing them that they are not alone in the struggle against bullying.
Meredith herself was a victim of bullying and based on her experience, she became an advocate for victims of bullying and an anti-bullying spokesperson. Meredith recounts that when she was in middle school, she was a victim of excessive bullying due to having an appearance and personality that didn't fit in with social expectations. She has stated that "she was bullied from a very young age. It got really bad in middle school, and when 'Celebrity' came out in high school, people began to be nicer to me. The thing that causes bullying for a lot of teens is just being different. When teens are insecure with themselves they pick on others for being different".
Student Volunteers of YOUSMILE and Meredith will share the message of children and young people against bullying during a live web show that will take place on Saturday 4 April. Meredith's visit to Greece is taking place as part of a worldwide Anti-bullying School Tour. Next stations of Meredith and her team will be Australia and Singapore.
