The American Dream becomes a reality and will be served in the center of Athens for one night. On 9 March The Clumsies will be setting up another impressive Pop Up Bar and taking us on a transatlantic journey from the east to west coast of America with six stops, all gathered together to take off in the heart of Athens.
One year after The Clumsies Hotel Bar event, which took place in a 100 year old mansion on Praxitelous Street next to The Clumsies, another historic building in the centre of Athens will be transformed into a real life American neighbourhood and will be bursting with street art and urban culture. We will be hosting six of the greatest American cocktail bars, all of them on the 2016 list of the World’s 50 Best Bars, in which The Clumsies also appears (#9 in 2016 and #22 in 2015).
Apart from the ‘straight from the USA cocktails’, guests will have the opportunity to try authentic American street food by Nomad which is one of the best bar-restaurants on the planet. Its sous-chef, Michael Rellergert, who will be here in Athens especially for the event.
From 20:00 in the evening until exactly 00:00, cocktail fans can enjoy a tour in the ground floor and basement of a historic Athenian building, which will have been especially converted into an American quarter for the evening. They can wander around and visit the hottest speakeasy bars in the world as well as the more classic unrivalled hangouts of New York. In other words, for one night, The Clumsies American Dream Bar will host some of the greatest bars in the USA under the same roof for the first time, thanks to the adventurous genius of the famous Athenian team.

Employees Only/New York: The popular speakeasy bar of New York, with its amazing cocktails and timeless art deco style, accessible via a mysterious foyer fronted by a fortune teller, plays a leading role in the global bar scene. Permanently ranked as one of the World’s 50 Best Bars, it has occupied a place within the top ten for the last three years (#7 in 2016, #4 in 2015, #5 in 2014, #12 in 2013, #11 in 2012, # 15 in 2011). Winner of the famous Spirited Awards as Best American Bar Team, World’s Best Cocktail Bar and World’s Best Drinks Selection from the acclaimed Tales of the Cocktail awards, it held #4 position in the 2015 Drinks International list.

In order to get in, enter a red phone booth just off the neighbourhood hot dog joint, call up the host and if there is a free stool, the entrance is through a secret door. And where is it? Located in the East Village, the centre of modern bartending and a cocktail paradise, the bar was credited with the title of best bar in the world in the World’s 50 Best Bars 2011 and continues to be on the same list to this day (# 1 in 2011, #2 in 2012, #13 in 2013, #18 in 2014, #37 in 2015, #45 in 2016). The Clumsies has been inspired to make a den in the basement of a building somewhere in Athens on March 9, recreating some of the mysterious New York atmosphere of this flagship bar.
Trick Dog/San Francisco: An old factory was transformed into the busiest high volume bar of San Francisco. Cocktail lovers flock to the industrial-chic venue where the witty concept menu is always a reference point for contemporary trends within bar culture. After all, the Trick Dog knows all the scams that make fine drinking a cosmopolitan and sophisticated pastime. After opening in 2013, in the last three years it has been permanently on the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars (#35 in 2016, #40 in 2015, #33 in 2014).
The legendary Caffe Dante is a historic hangout which opened in Greenwich Village in 1915 as a classic Italian café. Since then it has seen many famous guests pass through its doors, such as Ernest Hemingway, Al Pacino, Bob Dylan and Pattie Smith. In 2016 it was transformed into a lively bar, staying true to the character of its one hundred and more years heritage. Authentic and original at the same time, it has rightly gained a place within the World’s 50 Best Bars (#34 in 2016).
Nomad Bar/New York: A first-class bar, which is inspired not only by the glamour but also the dark side of old Manhattan. It is the perfect example of fine drinking that the Big Apple has to offer. Classic cocktails with a twist, a mysterious entrance which flirts with the speakeasy experience (a tiny sign to one side or access via the lively Elephant Bar which is housed in the iconic Nomad Hotel) and the impeccably trained staff, place it within the top ten of the World’s 50 Best Bars (#8 in 2016, #36 in 2015). The Nomad also stands out for its amazing dishes and on the night of 9 March they will be offering authentic New York style street food, which will be a truly satisfying experience.
The Walker Inn/Los Angeles: Small and friendly, it has come to redefine the traditional description of a bar. Whoever walks through its secret door, which looks just like that of any other, will be able to try daring cocktails and high-concept drinks inspired by things like the seasonal availability of the basic ingredients as well as the future of the global climate. Its theatrical style, the charm of the staff and its authentic free spirit have put it on the list of the World’s Best Bars (#37 in 2016).
On the night of the event, the cocktails will be priced as chips which one can obtain at the entrance. Each chip will cost €10 and will correspond to a signature cocktail from one of the best bars in America which The Clumsies American Dream Bar will host.
The team will have a surprise for Athenians on 8 March 2017, one day before the big event of The Clumsies American Dream Bar, with an enlightening talk by the organiser of the Tales of the Cocktail festival, Ann Tuennerman. The name behind the prestigious institution for the drinks and beverages industry will be in Athens for the first time to share her knowledge and experience of the international fine drinking scene.
The Tales of the Cocktail awards are seen as the equivalent of the Oscars in the bartending world as they host the crème de la crème of the industry and highlight some of the best bars and bartenders worldwide every year. The legendary founder of the festival will be here from New Orleans to talk about the ‘distillation process’ of the whole experience, the ‘fermentation’ and trends, as well as the methods and secrets behind the most successful bar festival worldwide.
