American documentary on bullying reaches Greek students in rural island

29 April 2015

The American documentary "Bully" directed by Lee Hirsch was screened at five high schools in the remote island of Kos, March 30- April 4, as part of the Embassy Athens-sponsored program Docs on Wheels II. This is the second year that the Embassy is supporting the Docs on Wheels series of documentary screenings around Greece, a program organized by the film center Exile Room. In Kos, a remote island on the southeast boarder of Greece, Exile Room partnered with the local Film Club and the nonprofit Organization for the Promotion of Psychosocial Health "Ippokratis" to host screenings focused on raising awareness against bullying. More than 400 students, 13-17 years old, and educators watched the film "Bully." Following the screenings, the students participated in workshops, led by filmmaker and director of Exile Room Valerie Kontakos, who travelled to the island for the program, and local educators. They were split up in teams and discussed their own experiences in school, as well as all possible solutions to the problem of bullying.
