International Community Begins Review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

29 April 2015

Every five years the international community gathers to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The next review will begin on April 27th and run until May 22nd at the UN in New York City. Secretary Kerry will deliver the U.S. national statement on April 27th.

Since its entry into force in 1970, the NPT has become the most important multilateral treaty on nuclear weapons, and almost every country in the world has subscribed to it. At the Review Conference, the United States will reaffirm its commitment to nuclear nonproliferation and a world free of nuclear weapons, as well as our support for peaceful uses of nuclear energy for development.
