Tracking COVID-19 with Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a powerful tool for tracking and treating COVID-19 in the U.S. and abroad.

Several U.S. institutions are developing new AI technology or using preexisting technology to monitor and treat the new coronavirus.

HealthMap, an AI application run by Boston Children’s Hospital, was launched in 2006. It was among the first tracking mechanisms to detect the COVID-19 outbreak in China.

Artificial Intelligence Helps to Read Damaged Ancient Scripts on Stone

Greek researcher Yannis Assael and his colleagues at Google subsidiary DEEP MIND and University of Oxford created "Pythia,” an artificial intelligence algorithm trained to assist historians in deciphering eroded Ancient Greek inscriptions. Pythia learned to recognize some 35,000 eroded texts containing over 3 million words. These texts were found on varied surfaces like stone, ceramic, and metal and ranged from the 7th centuty BC to the 5th century AD (1,500 to 2,700 years old).
