Being enthralled by another country's way of life does not mean that it is always an accurate portrayal rather it becomes a sentimental and idealized depiction; an homage to a heritage that isn't ones own. These locations are a perception of fantasy, a sense of what the other wishes the reality would be; a reaction to the homogenization of European and American cultures.
With Bottom of the Lake, Christian Patterson takes an allusive view of his hometown of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The work revolves around the 1973 Fond du Lac Telephone Directory, published shortly after the artist's birth. Patterson revisited and photographed places listed in the book and eventually placed his images inside his reproduction of the directory.
Each year the festival focuses on a specific theme, encompassing a range of photo-based forms including photography, installations, multimedia and photobooks. The 2015 edition's theme under the title "Reframing Memory" explores how photographers and artists today represent past/history, defining the social changes they undergo, bringing together a wide range of international artistic positions.
